Thank you Santa!

I was planning to write about ID cards tonight; about how they are a bad idea which won’t achieve any of the things they’re supposed to. But that can wait: instead, I intend to devote this blog to a celebration of an unexpected but very welcome Christmas present. I am of course referring to the resignation of David Blunkett, in whose honour I have written these festive lines.

Jingle bells, jingle bells
David’s gone away
We’re all a wee bit safer now
He’s not Home Secretary

Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells
His plans were so scary
He wanted a big database
Of all of the UK

It would have cost a bomb
It would have been a mess
The contract would have gone
To the usuals, EDS

It wouldn’t have stopped crime
And we would have been left
With a truly giant bill
And widespread ID theft

So! Jingle bells, jingle bells
David’s gone away
So let’s all raise our glasses up
And shout hip hip hooray!

  1. Nope – it just wasn’t very good. However my glass is definitely half full on ID cards. I can’t wait.Merry Xmas!

  2. Great, I hope you enjoy forking out £85 for a pointless card, and then paying again every time you need to update any of your information – even if it’s to correct an error made by a civil servant inputting your data. And a merry Christmas to you too.

  3. As does a driver’s license or passport, without the need to spend an estimated £3 billion of taxpayers’ money to set up a completely new system.
